Integrated Ecosystem Research
This biogeographic assessment integrates marine species information to evaluate changes in boundary options for California marine sanctuaries, and also for commercial needs, such as siting analysis for impacts of wind farms and shipping lanes to fragile ecosystems and wildlife.

Most marine research is limited in scope by the expertise of the scientists. In integrated ecosystem research, interdisciplinary teams of scientists collaborate to investigate the full breadth of ecosystem processes and interactions in the system of interest.

NCCOS is involved in integrated ecosystem research in the Gulf of Mexico, California Current, and the Pacific Islands. We bring data and expertise in ecosystem characterization, biogeographic assessment, social science, and GIS. We’re also developing new approaches to merging data and other information collected in different times and places using different collection methods.
