Abstract: The research project is transitioning to operations an ensemble-based, statistical modeling framework for hypoxia forecasting and assessment in the Gulf of Mexico and Chesapeake Bay. The principal investigators are working with NOAA on the transition planning and implementation, resulting in the first adoption within NOAA of an operational, scenario-based ecological forecasting application. The intent is to house the forecast model systems within NOAA to allow sustained operations, thus ensuring future applicability. It is envisioned that success in this effort would be extensible to other regions where hypoxia forecasts supported by competitive funding are informing managers of hypoxia mitigation strategies. NCCOS is providing $200,000 in support of this 2-year project.
